The Raag-Mala Music Society of Toronto is a cultural organization that was founded in 1981 by a small group of dedicated individuals who loved Indian classical music, otherwise known as shastriya sangeet.

The basic idea emanated from Canada's ideal of multi-cultural harmony. The name Raag-Mala means "a garland of raags". A raag is loosely translated into English as a "melodic form", but in fact it encompasses an entire modal pattern and mood. In Indian culture, a garland is usually an offering made of flowers. In this case it is the sharing of the art and music by an artist with an appreciate audience, and in turn the joy and enthusiasm given back to the artist by that audience that makes Raag-Mala so special. This mutual offering is the inspiration of the Society, and continues to be its inspiration.

When Magan Ambasna, Raya Bidaye, Govind Pachapurkar, Krishna Persaud, and Rudy Wall came together during those early years, little did they imagine that the organization that they founded would become the custodian of a venerable cultural tradition. Since then, the group of volunteers that cherishes and shares their ideal has grown, and works tirelessly to present the very best that Indian classical music can offer to the Toronto music lover.
